PostSubject: Was It Worth All That?   Fri Oct 28, 2011 12:08 am

Like thunder, the tumultuous water roared, its foamy spray spitting into the air the the froth from the mouth of a rabid, champing animal. Standing at the bank of the rapidly churning river, a gaunt black wolf silently took in the sight. Water, water...only water. From what he could see, there was no way to cross, not even if swimming. Frowning at the river and rejecting this notion of defeat, the wolf turned and began trotting down stream with his head held high and his almost mockingly haughty brown eyes constantly searching for a way to pass.

The river was long, and irritatingly, it spanned the entire border of the territory he was trying to enter. Just his luck - as usual; he'd come in from an obscure direction. The scent of the pack wolves was faint, but it wasn't a mystery to Coven why the others didn't frequent this border: they didn't need to. The river guarded it well enough. Undaunted, though, the wolf kept going, because eventually the river had to end, or there another way to cross would make itself apparent. And that it did.

In the most recent miles along the river, a thick forest had erupted along both sides. All the traveling and diligence had paid off; two trees, one larger, one more of a glorified sapling, had fallen somewhere along the riverside and ended up stuck together, forming a loose, flimsy bridge of sorts over the water.

Snorting in triumph and smirking in his glory, the male pranced up to the log lodged against his side of the river and touched his nose to it gingerly, trying to assess just how poor this bridge was. The log passed the first test, so the black wolf carefully placed his front paws on the slimy, algae-covered wood. Then followed his back paws. The constant, whooshing sound of the water swirling up against the logs throbbed in the male's ears as he inched his way carefully along the fallen tree, stopping every few inches to dig his claws into the rotting mush of the tree. He was not so much an idiot as to fear death, though he was crazy enough to challenge it so openly. Finally, he made it to the edge of the large log, crouching to hold his balance better as he looked over the smaller log. His ears flicked back and his eyes narrowed at the twig of a tree that had deceived him in looking so much sturdier from far off. It seemed doubtful from here that a mouse could cross the rickety thing without upsetting its balance and sending all aboard into the water, to their deaths. Still crouching and scowling, the wolf cast a glance behind him, toward the shore he'd started on. But backing up was out of the question...not just because of his pride, but because it physically would not work out. He had as much a chance of survival in going forward as he had in going back. So forward it was.

This portion of the river was more narrow than the part before, thus why the logs had been able to get stuck, and while that meant the water was even rougher in this area, especially with all the boulders hidden beneath the brown waves, it also meant that there was only ten feet from where Coven stood now to the bank. Ten feet to cross. He could do it...Sucking in a misty breath, the wolf made his way onto the multiple thin branches that were connecting his perch to the other. They held his weight fairly well and cut off another five feet. Making across the trunk was going to be impossible. Literally. His feet were almost as big as the trunk.
Digging in his claws, the wolf made his decision: he'd jump. 'One, two...' he counted down in his head, marking each number with a deep breath, 'THREE!' Coven pounced on the narrow trunk, hoping to get at least some force behind him to back him up. The tree gave way, as he'd expected, but there had been just enough resistance to launch him a few feet. Almost to the bank.

With a tremendous splash, the wolf landed in the water. His feet scrabbled against the soft silt lining the river bottom, but the strength of the river easily swept him downstream. Kicking with all his strength, Coven was trying to gain only inches on the raging river, only inches until he was out of the current and able to get on land. Over and over again the wolf was dunked under the water, but miraculously, he was able to keep above it well enough to stay alive and stayed strong enough to successfully fight against the current that continually tried to yank him into the center of the stream. Again, endurance paid off, and a large rock jutting out of the water caused a small, shallow area to be cut off from the powerful current. Coven drew himself into this area, and with gasping breaths and shaking limbs, he pulled himself up onto the shore to lay there panting, still halfway in the water. After fifteen minutes, the wolf dragged himself to his feet, shook out his wet and muddied coat, and began to sniff around this side of the river. In this forested area, the scents of the others was much more fresh, and he picked up the scents of a few wolves he hadn't gotten before. Standing up straight, Coven looked through the trees toward the rest of the pack land that he couldn't see. Good thing he didn't care what he looked like, because someone was going to find him. And with that deciding thought, he tilted his head to the treetops and let out a howl, just to announce that he was there.

(hehe, yes...I'm going to be mean to you right now and deprive Coven of being greeted by Blitz)

Chaos snarled in frustration as she made her way through the trees, a pathetically skinny branch of leaves and thorns swinging back and smacking her in the face, leaving some nice, painfull cuts along her black muzzle. Her ears flicked backwards as she made her way through the thick brush, for some reason heading towards the Southern border. She hated being in the center of the pack lands, since that was where the pack usually gathered. The Omega typically avoided the pack, mostly to avoid conflict. Well, that and....other living things. She was small and easily overpowered, although she was fiesty and nasty if anyone tried. She was never one to go down without a fight. That is, unless it was with the monstrous size of Blitz. He was the only wolf in the pack she had even an ounce of respect for.

She snarled again as she tripped over a thick tree root, but was rewarded by the sound of the powerful rapids nearby. She moved a bit faster, but skidded to a stop as a sudden howl erupted from the trees several yards ahead of her. Her ears pinned back in annoyance and frustration, but the sudden scent that reached her alerted her of his loner status, that is, if the tone in his howl hadn't already done that. She sniffed the air deeper, catching more of his scent to confirm. Yes, definitely not a pack member. She smiled, glad that she wouldn't be forced to put up with submitting to yet another pack member. Yet her skin still crawled at the thought of actually being in another wolf's presence. She sighed, but she knew Blitz would be pissed if she let him wander into the lands, and well, let's just say she didn't want to have Blitz pissed at her.

With a soft groan, she made her way towards him, coming to a stop a few yards of him, just barely in view. Her snarl cut through the silent, shattering the peace that the forest had held only moments before. She didn't move, however, but stayed where she was, half in and half out of the shadows as she glared at him. "Who the hell are you?" She growled, the hair on her back sticking up and her ears pinned back in her normal greeting posture. No, Chaos did not play well with others.

The black male whipped his gaze over to the shadows where the snarl had come from. Instantly his ears defensively flipped back onto his skull and his wet fur spiked up along his back. Then Chaos emerged. With a genuinely amused chuckle, Coven relaxed considerably, bringing his ears forward and eying Chaos with a bemused expression. "Who are you?" he retorted, sensing that she wasn't who he was searching for right now. Sauntering up a few feet with a defiantly cocky half-smile on his face, he suggested, "Why don't you run off and fetch your alpha for me, lady? I'm here to see him, not you." Not that he expected the small wolfess to even consider skedaddling off, but he was making certain that she knew there was no way he'd be answering to her anytime soon. There were definitely better things to be doing than wasting time with her.

Chaos's fur bristled in annoyance as the male approached and spoke. She knew that it was her gender and her smaller size that caused his behavior, and she knew that he wouldn't be expecting her to attack. So, that's exactly what she decided to do. She had been longing to attack Fallon for ages, but since the annoying female was a pack member, she could get in serious trouble for doing so. So instead, she would attack a disrespectful loner. She snarled again, bunching up her back legs and springing at him, aiming at his throat, although the angle wasn't the most optimal for a killing stroke. She had to rely on her speed, which she had plenty of, since there was no hope of knocking him over because he was much larger than her. She may be a small female, but she was definitely skilled when it came to fighting, and she had no problem attacking a difficult loner that rubbed her the wrong way.

Well, there was definitely bite under Chao's vicious bark, and Coven got a pretty nice taste of it across his shoulder. Not having expected her to attack, simply to yap some more, the male's reflexes were not quite as sharp as they could have been. They were enough to save his neck, though. Chaos would have been fairly capable of tearing it right out.
Springing to the side, tearing out of Chaos' grasp, the black male dove into survival mode. In a very male way. There was no way this scrappy wolfess was going to take him down. The fact that it was technically her turf meant nothing compared to his pride.
The female's quick attack had gained her a mouthful of Coven's hair and skin - with such a wide mouth you'd think she'd have talked longer - but it had also warned him off her speed. He knew his own strengths, and his speed couldn't match up, though strength and size gave him the upper hand, in his opinion. It'd have to be a war of attrition for the wolfess, but Coven knew his tenacity would make that difficult for her to succeed in.
If only he felt he could succeed, too. Making no move definitively toward her, though feinting a bit in hopes that she'd make a mistake he could swoop in on, Coven mainly waited, snarling and goading all the while. If she tried to strike again, his plan was to use her momentum and his stature to bowl her over and hopefully get ahead that way.
A few seconds later, he decided to modify his plan. The wolf lunged at her with a powerful leap, though keeping his feet as close to the ground as possible, hoping either to snatch her throat or knock her off her feet if she countered.

Chaos spat fur and skin from her jaws as he sprang away, finding her footing quickly and standing her ground as he snarled and seemed to wait. But then it was obvious that his plan changed, and the moment he lunged for her, she sprang out of reach, snarling and landing several feet away, facing him with her tail high and her fur bristling. She knew better than to spring at him again, now that he was waiting for it. Instead she stood her ground, snarling and spitting out his thick fur as she watched him warily. She knew he was scheming, and she wanted to be ready for anything that he threw at her.

It soon became apparent as the wolves faced off that they both were waiting for the other to strike. Coven had thought that his attack would goad her on to come after him, but now he figured that she was as old as she looked with experience and brains coming with that age. Finally, he decided it was up to him to break up this stale-mate. Chaos had nothing to lose if they just stood here this way, but Coven just didn't have it in him to either back down or leave a fight unsettled. So he flew at her again, this time ready to pursue Chaos if she tried to run. Either she'd have to run away or face him and actually fight. And either way, Coven knew that he'd either be victorious (until she returned with her pack) or he'd be able to at least deal a nice bit of damage to the little black shrew.

It was easy to tell he was growing impatient with their stalemate. She widened her stance as he tensed, and she lowered to the ground as he flew at her, holding her ground with a sharp snarl of defiance. Then, only seconds before he reached her, she leaped to the side, springing back towards him at the last moment with her jaws open and aimed at his leg. She snapped at his foreleg, swerving and ducking away as fast as she possibly could and leaping out of reach. Her snarl didn't cease, and her ears remained pinned back as she kept her eyes on him, watching his every move.

Her jaws missed his foreleg by millimeters, but Coven almost wished she hadn't. If she'd stick around near him long enough to get in a good bite, he could get one back and hold it; he was sure.
Either way, that hadn't been happening, and it was really grating on him. This conflict was dragging out way too long for his liking.

Ready to speed it up, Coven wasted not a second after the black wolfess flew past him. Once his own feet hit the dirt, the wolf whirled around and lunged at her again, using his momentum to charge quickly nearer to the wolfess. He came at her with gaping, snarling jaws and a vicious, determined expression. The wolfess would have no time to watch anymore, because he was going to keep coming at her until she slipped up or charged him back.

Coven went at her now with quick, steadily-planted steps so he'd be balanced and controlled. Jumping at her hadn't done any good, so he was over that strategy. He kept his head a bit lowered as he snarled and snapped, protecting his throat as best he could and grabbing for hers.

Chaos was surprised when he lunged at her instantly, and she scrambled out of reach, his jaws just barely missing her side. She didn't have much time, however, because he charged at her again, giving her no time to find footing or leap away. She managed to scramble away one more time, but the next time he lunged at her, his large body collided with hers, knocking her off her feet and sending her tumbling. As she felt him impact her, she felt sharp fangs dig into her, just barely missing her throat. She yelped and jerked to the side, her jaws snapping at him in an attempt to escape as she felt her own blood seeping down through her fur. She knew she should give up and run, but she couldn't do that, she couldn't give up. It just wasn't in her make-up. So she continued to fight, struggling to free herself and refusing to go down, no matter how little footing she could get. She never stopped trying to get her footing back.

Finally! Coven had been able to latch on to Chaos, and now that he had his grip, there was no way he was letting go. His breath came rapidly, and blood flooded his mouth so the air was only able to come in through his nose. Blood flew as the two shook and struggled, but it was obvious neither one was going to give up. The black male had one thought on his mind: don't let go, get her down quick. The she-wolf's fangs were too close in proximity to his own skin, but he couldn't readjust his grip at all in this struggle until he got her down.

Coven had gotten a hold of the wolfess at an angle that was not quite opportune (except for the fact that he got her good and was able to keep hold of her); he wasn't able to throw his weight around well enough to knock her over. So again, he charged her - his teeth still deeply embedded in her neck - hoping he was strong enough where he was to push her back long enough that her footing would give way, or that her loss of blood would weaken her enough for him to dominate.

Chaos refused to give up the struggle, snarling and gnashing at him as often as possible, refusing to let him knock her over and ignoring the fact that her muscles ached and seemed to grow tired. She pressed on, biting and struggling and refusing to topple over as they fought. She may be small, but there was no way she'd let herself lose this battle. Especially since they were in the pack lands and he was a loner. Finally she managed to twist her neck around, snarling and snapping at his neck, her claws scraping the ground and his forelegs as she tried to get a hold of him.

Cursing this female's tenacity and strength (he would have had most any other female down by now), the black wolf continued to push at her, his teeth knotted in her skin. He let out a guttural snarl as Chaos' fangs found his neck. She wasn't near his throat, but she could get closer, and he knew it.
She was also doing a pretty good job of scratching up his front legs, which reminded him of another option. Without loosening his grip on Chaos, he rose up on his back legs and tried to ram at her with his front legs. Because of his angle and the female's struggling, one of his feet didn't even hit her, but the other caught her hard in the shoulder. He tried again, still with the aim to knock her off balance or crush her, but this time with his weight coming more from above than directly into the side of her shoulder and chest.

Finally! Finally she got a hold on his neck. She knew she wasn't close enough to his throat, but she carefully and gradually shifted her jaws to bring her bite closer and closer to it. It was a slow, and painful process, but it was a process, which made dealing with his fangs in her bearable. Each time he slammed against her, she held tightly, fighting to remain on her feet as his larger body pounded against her. He was crushing her from above, pressing her into the ground, but she refused to let her legs crumble completely, and she refused to let them fall out from beneath her. Between each of his shoves, she shifted her bite, and during each hit, she tightened it and held fast. She bled continuously, but she refused to give up, something that she wouldn't do until she looked death right in the eye and spat in it's face.

As Coven and Chaos struggled, the male became aware of Chaos' subtly shifting grasp on his neck. He knew what she was doing, and he was determined not to let her get close. With a sudden jerk, Coven tore his teeth from Chaos' neck and in the process also freed himself, messily, from the jaws of the female. With the same motion and now free to move to his advantage, Coven drove the side of his body into Chaos', grabbing at her with his claws and snapping at the back of her neck. He wasn't going to tear out her throat, but he hopefully would topple her and get her that way.

As the male released her and tore free of her jaws, Chaos sprang instantly backwards, attempting to get out of reach of his fangs. However, she was soon met by a heavy blow to her side, sending her flying as his jaws snapped on air as they aimed for her neck. Apparently he had miscalculated his force, because the slamming against her little body had sent her airborn until she landed with a yelp against a thick tree trunk. It took her only a moment to orient herself, and she sprang back to her feet, snarling and spitting out dirt and dust that had gathered in the air around her.

Just before the black female could analyze the situation, a large white figure stepped into the clearing. "What the hell is going on here!?!" He snarled, his eyes landing on the new male and then widening as he spotted Chaos, panting and soaked in blood as she stood by the tree. At this sight, his snarl intensified, and he turned on the male, standing between Chaos and the newcomer threateningly. "Who are you and what are you doing in my pack lands attacking my pack members?!?" He demanded, his tail raised in dominance and authority.

Chaos grew silent as Blitz suddenly appeared, but she couldn't help but growl under her breath as he defended her. "Blitz, I don't need to be defended. I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself." She said as she remained behind him, not stupid enough to ignore the fact that she could barely walk. Yes, she was stubborn, but she was no fool. She knew when to stop, and when to accept help. Now was one of those times, so other than her comment, she said and did nothing further to prevent her alpha from defending her.

Spitting the she-wolf's blood from his mouth, Coven appraised the big, new wolf. Aha. Alpha. Still a bit too wound up and on the defensive to act properly at the moment, the black wolf responded, his breath still ragged from the adrenaline and action, "I was defending myself, actually. I was looking for you, it just so happens, before this little tussle." Still with his head lowered defensively, the wolf tilted his ears minutely and eyed the white wolf. "You the alpha?"

Chaos snarled as the black male said he was defending himself, but she remained where she was, sitting and watching the two males, ready to attack if this newcomer proved to be as stupid as she appraised him to be. But she did nothing as Blitz spoke with him, letting the alpha take over for now. She knew that no matter how much the pack members hated her, it was part of her responsibility to protect the pack. She hoped that Molly would help heal her wounds, even after her treatment of the little white wolf. But for now she ignored her bleeding wounds and focused on Coven and Blitz.

"Yes, I am Blitzen, the alpha of this territory. And you choose your battles rather poorly. She would have fought until one of you was killed." He said, leaving Chaos behind him to move closer to the male, standing tall and dominant as he stopped a few feet from him. "I nearly killed her when she arrived. But she's tough, and hell, this world won't be rid of her that easily." He said, glancing back at Chaos, knowing that there was no way this new male had enough energy after that fight to attack him and stand any chance. Plus, it was obvious that Chaos was still watching, ready to defend her alpha no matter how exhausted and fragile she was at the moment. But soon his gaze was back on the new male. "Who are you and what are you doing here?" He asked, demanding to know why this male seemed so determined to be inside of Silverlight. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have put up with Chaos's attacks and would already be gone.

"I don't pick my fights based on 'easy'," commented the wolf with a slight lilt in his tone now, slightly affronted that this alpha, Blitzen, had so quickly assumed that Coven did not know what kind of battle he was fighting. The black wolf knew, based on his own tenacity, that he hadn't chosen that battle poorly (though it was unlikely that he'd back down from any fight, no matter how unmatched): in the end, it would have the she-wolf who was dead.

Flitting his gaze quickly between the two wolves in front of him and flicking back his ears begrudgingly, Coven responded, more subdued now with the large, healthy male glaring down at him, "My name's Coven, and I was curious about the possibility of joining your pack here." Ok, a bit more than curious.

Chaos's snarl echoed through the trees as the male spoke of joining their pack. Her ears pinned back and she got to her feet, forcing herself not to collapse as the lack of bloodflow to her brain nearly made her pass out. But she hid it well, and she stood her ground strongly, her teeth bared and her eyes threatening. There was no way she wanted him in this pack. Especially since if he were admitted into the pack, he would hold a higher ranking position than herself. She would not be able to handle that. But when Blitz shot her a look, she silenced herself, sitting back down and settling for just glaring angrily at the male.

Blitz then returned his gaze to the black male, his ears flicking backwards slightly. Then he turned around, moving back to Chaos's side. "Chaos, you've proven that I can trust you to protect Silverlight and it's pack members. I don't believe that you belong in the omega position anymore. You have also proved to be a strong, determined warrior, therefore I would like to move you to the Head Warrior, since Inferno is now Beta male. However, this means you must behave around the other pack members, do you understand?" He said, looking down at her and smiling as she nodded silently. He knew she would respect his words, and that hopefully she'd prove her understanding of them when she needed Molly to heal her.

Then he turned back to Coven, grinning slightly. "Very well, Coven. Silverlight could use another strong warrior like yourself. However, since Chaos is now the new Head Warrior, you will have to answer to her. She, in turn, answers to me. Do you understand?" He asked, holding back the grin when Chaos snorted in amusement and kept his face serious.

The wolf shot a quick, distasteful glance at Chaos before standing up straight and looking back at the alpha. "Yup," he answered, nodding his head. While answering to that little slice of hell would not be pleasant, Coven did respect that she could hold her own. And more than that, it meant a lot that she answered to this alpha - he must have something more than his size and smugness.
Blitz would prove himself more later; Chaos would never be ok with Coven; but being a member of a pack felt good again. Safe...ish. He cast another side-long glance at the little snake before asking Blitz, "So, what is this pack, anyway?" A name would be nice.

Chaos couldn't help but growl at his glance, but she said nothing as he turned his attention back to Blitz. She was too busy figuring out what had just happened to her. She had gone from Omega to Head Warrior in one day! She watched the two males, her mind racing as she tried to understand Blitz's logic. But hey, she wasn't going to argue. Maybe the other pack members would respect her more, although she doubted it. She knew that Fallon would definitely not be pleased, and the image of what the hunter's face would look like made her grin. That would definitely be amusing.

Blitz glanced back at Chaos as she growled, but as Coven spoke, he turned his attention back to the newest member. "I have already mentioned that the name of these packlands is Silverlight. I hope you listen to Chaos more intently than you listen to me, she'll be much less forgiving." He said, ignoring the growl of the female behind him. Finally he grew tired of her growling and glaring, and he turned to her, standing and pinning his ears back. "Chaos, for heavens sake, calm down and go get Molly and get yourself cleaned up. And don't attack her again or I'll let Inferno rip your ear off." He said, knowing that Inferno would be there with Molly and the newest female member of their pack, Laek. He then turned back to Coven, looking him over carefully. "You should go with her. Molly is the pack healer, and you should let her take a look at those wounds. We have no use for a weak warrior with infected wounds." He said, nodding in the direction that Chaos was already heading. He silently hoped that the fighting wouldn't resume the minute he left.

Ah, so Silverlight was it's name. The wolf had never before heard of a land or pack with such a elegant, almost loving name. He'd thought Silverlight was a wolf. Yet again, Blitz had snapped back at the wolf with an incorrect judgment, and Coven was now under the distinct impression that he was not liked very much at all. Surely a little fight - started by the female, no less - couldn't have done him so much damage already?

Holding his tongue, the male nodded to Blitz at his suggestion and proceeded to follow loosely behind Chaos. As he walked, the black wolf couldn't help but ponder seriously over the idea that joining this pack may have been a mistake.

Blitz watched the two wolves leave, relieved that no fight broke out instantly. He would have to keep his eye on those two. He hoped that Chaos would be more cooperative now that she held a higher ranking position in the pack. He slowly turned, heading off to patrol and hopefully find Khalessi and Fallon to get some hunting done.

Chaos's ears pinned back as she heard the male wolf padding a distance behind her. No matter how much she wanted to let herself collapse and sleep, she knew that she needed to get to Molly to get her wounds taken care of before she lost too much blood. She was getting light headed and dizzy, and she stumbled slightly before regaining her footing and pressing forward again. Finally the dens came into view, and she lifted her nose to scent the air for Molly. Then she caught her scent, turning and heading to the stream to find her. She stopped as the little white figure came into view, lapping at the cool water. "Uhm, Molly?" She asked, trying not to frighten the healer like she had before.

Molly jumped slightly at the sound of Chaos's voice. She spun around, but her eyes didn't widen in fear, they widened in shock. "Chaos! What happened to you?!?" No matter how much she feared the black female, she couldn't help but care, she was part of the pack, afterall. She walked towards the black female, stopping beside her and proceeding to lick her wounds. "Laek is in my den right now with Inferno, so lets get you over to the stream to clean up." She said, nudging Chaos to the water's edge where she started to clean off the female's wounds. When she had them all clean, she disappeared to grab some herbs, coming back and chewing them into a paste before applying them to the wounds. When Chaos growled at the stinging pain, Molly flinched, but when the black female's growling stopped, she looked up at her before finishing and stepping back. "You need to be careful for a few days. That means no fighting. Ok?" She asked, smiling as Chaos grudgingly agreed.

As they had traveled (this territory was quite large), Coven fell even further behind. He didn't want to get caught up in trouble again with Chaos, and he wasn't in as dire need of care as her. Infection was his main worry, but it'd take a lot longer than his slow trip to get him. So instead of sticking to Chaos's heels, the black wolf took in the sights of Silverlight. It was strange to him - and thus so intriguing - that while these were only trees surrounding him, there was an almost undetectable, yet very extant, beauty and...presence. The hair on the back of the wolf's neck prickled slightly at the odd feeling.

Soon enough, Coven caught the close scent of another wolfess, and he found himself in the company of Molly and Chaos. Molly's back was to him, so keeping his voice as casual and docile as possible, the wolf spoke, "Hey, there. Are you Molly?" Though he didn't show it (Coven was way too proud to ever give the appearance of nervousness), the wolf was slightly worried about how this white wolfess would respond to him, as it was obvious, unfortunately, that it was he Chaos had been scathed by. But hey, Chaos had got him, too.
